Mitigating the seismic pounding of multi-story buildings in series using linear and nonlinear fluid viscous dampers

Abstract Seismic-induced pounding between adjacent buildings may have serious consequences, ranging from minor damage up to total collapse. Therefore, researchers try mitigate the problem using different methods, such as coupling with stiff beams, connecting them viscoelastic links, and installing damping devices in each building individually. In current paper, effect of linear nonlinear fluid viscous dampers mutual a series structures is investigated. Nonlinear finite-element analysis steel equipped was conducted. Contact surfaces both contactor target were used model pounding. The results indicate that use or leads significant reduction response series. Moreover, substantial improvement performance has been observed for almost all stories. From design point view, it concluded implemented should be designed resist maximum force 6.20 1.90 times independent case dampers, respectively. Also, designers pay attention structural elements surrounding because considerable forces due occur at displaced position structure.
